The drawbridge

Reach your services when you're away.

The situation

You are away and need to reach a Freeish service at home or work. Leaving that service open to anyone on the internet is not the only way in.

What Freeish does

When a laptop leaves your home or office, it loses its path back to your fortress (your Freeish server). Once set up on your always-on server, Drawbridge gives your devices a private, encrypted path home. This VPN connection lets your devices keep checking in and, once the Treasure Room is available, lets you access your local cloud from elsewhere. Only devices you’ve added can use that private path.

How it actually works

The connection uses WireGuard, a VPN protocol. Your device and the gateway each have a cryptographic key. They use those keys to establish an encrypted tunnel, and your device sends traffic for the Freeish service through it. The first connection used to enroll a device is tightly limited; sending all of its internet traffic through the tunnel is a separate administrator-approved choice. This protects the connection to Freeish. It does not separate a smart camera from your laptop at home.

Can I use this now, and what would I need?

Yes, with a supported device and a reachable VPN gateway. The gateway and any needed router or firewall access must actually be configured. Selecting a private connection during setup does not by itself make an off-site device reachable.
